RPG a Day - Day 6

Today's topic: What's the most amazing thing a game group did for their community?

I listen to a gaming podcast called Fear the Boot. One of the members/friends of the Fear the Boot community is a man by the name of Scott Bonner. Scott is the director of the Ferguson Public Library.

As you might recall, Ferguson experienced some social unrest back in 2014 following the police shooting of Michael Brown, as well as the subsequent declination of a Grand Jury to press charges against the involved officer.

During the riots and protests in this time, Ferguson schools closed for various reasons. The library, however, remained open as a safe place for students and parents alike. They even invited teachers to come to the library to hold classes or tutoring sessions, anything that would help the students keep their education moving while the turmoil played out.

In recognition of Scott's great care for his community and the role the library played, the Ferguson Public Library was named "Library of the Year" in 2015.

In addition to all of that, the Fear the Boot community takes care of its own. The podcast hosts a gaming convention in the St. Louis area each year, Fear the Con. In recent years, each con has featured one or two charities in focus; no admission is charged for attendance, but attendees are asked to support the charities.

For the 2015 Fear the Con, the Ferguson Public Library was one of the featured charities.

Now, I don't know how much money was raised during the event. You could ask Dan or Derek about that. Regardless, Scott did a great job as a leader in his community, and his gaming community rose up to support him. I think that's a story worth telling.
